CASCO (WGME) – The man who took three bullets shielding his girlfriend in a Casco shooting said he was just protecting the love of his life.
The 32-year-old is still recovering after police said Norman Strobel shot him during a violent weekend crime spree.
Alyssa Goulet and her boyfriend Jason Almeida were staying at her mom’s cabin in Casco when their weekend getaway ended in a tragic act of domestic violence.
Goulet said they’d been helping her mother, Sandra, escape harassment and threats from her ex-boyfriend, Norman Strobel. Goulet believes Strobel was looking for Sandra when he came to the cabin late Saturday night. Instead, he found the young couple.
Goulet said another man came to the door pretending to be the sheriff. She told CBS 13 “Norm made visual contact with me in the kitchen window and then aimed the gun directly at me.”
Goulet went to hide in another room. While Almeida got her to safety, police said Strobel shot him three times. He’s now recovering in the intensive care unit at Central Maine Medical Center.
Goulet calls him her hero, but he said he was just protecting the love of his life.
He wrote his girlfriend this note saying “All I could think laying on that cabin floor was that he was gonna come in and kill you too and there was nothing I’d be able to do at that point.’
Police say Strobel killed his alleged accomplice before he was killed in a gun fight with police.
Sandra Goulet had filed a protection from abuse order against Strobel in July citing physical abuse and threats to kick her in the face and burn her alive.
He was in jail for violating that order, but got out exactly one week before the crime spree..
Goulet said “We would like to know why Norm was released. He has multiple charges and has continued to be a domestic violence nuisance and threat to my family.”
CBS 13 was told Almeida is already setting goals to be snowboarding by his birthday in January.
Goulet said they are getting by thanks to an outpouring of support.
A go fund me page has raised nearly $12,000 to help with medical care.
