AUGUSTA – Cops are seeing card skimmers all around the area at ATM’s, restaurants and gas stations.
Saturday morning, a Bangor bank notified Belfast police someone had tampered with one of its ATM’s. Police discovered a card skimmer on the ATM.
Now, state officials are warning people to be aware their digital information may be in jeopardy.
Deputy Attorney General Steve Giguere said “The credit card slides in and basically skims over a recording mechanism as it goes into the regular credit card reader. So, the actual transaction at the pump isn’t interrupted, it just skims the data off and records it.”
Recently, two men were arrested in Brewer after allegedly installing skimmers on credit reader at a gas station.
Giguere added “This is just put in line with the regular reader that’s credit-card activated at the pump, and it just a jumper essentially,”
It’s believed the people installing skimmers across the state are part of an organized effort.
“A lot of people installing these are from out of state. And they’ll come in and they’ll go through an area. And they’ve got a whole chain they sell these numbers to.” said Giguere.
When you’re using a gas pump credit card machine, check to see if the safety seal is intact.
The first most obvious thing is if you want to be 100 percent sure, that your credit is protected pay inside or use cash.
