HERMON- The cold didn’t deter skiers from heading to Hermon Mountain on Saturday, where Bangor’s closest skiing destination opened for the season.
Snow drove down from open until close, providing fresh powder for winter fun-seekers.
Even though temperatures barely got into double digits, workers at the mountain say the turnout was tremendous.
“Very, very surprised. The lift’s been full all day. It’s just been great. It’s just so neat, these kids. We’ve been doing it thirty years now, so i have kids with their kids here. That’s really just so much fun, and we’re grammy and grandma to everyone that comes,” says Bill Whitcomb, owner of Hermon Mountain.
Skiing is a staple in a Maine winter, and it’s no surprise some of the mountain’s repeat customers start early.
“I’ve had a lot of fun, and I’ve been going here for three years or so. I’m a little rusty, but on the other hand I think I’m pretty good at it,” said one skiier.
The owner estimatesmore than 300 skiers and snowboarders made it to opening day.
Hermon Mountain will be open Monday through Friday from 3-9, Saturdays from 9-9, and Sundays from 3-4.
