ORONO – The University of Maine is offering support to employees and students who were victims of an online phishing attack.
Officials say 86 people were tricked into providing their login credentials to cyber criminals in order to access a fraudulent online document.
That information was used to access the universities self-service accounts used by students and staff, allowing the crooks to access personal financial information including bank accounts and social security numbers.
The problem was discovered by the information security team which discovered the unauthorized account access. UMaine is now working to contact all the victims to provide them with free identity theft monitoring services.
The attorney general’s office is also investigating.
