BELFAST- 33 year old Miranda Hopkins appeared at the Belfast District Court on Tuesday after being taken into custody on Friday night.
Hopkins is charged with the murder of her seven week old son, Jaxson.
According to the affidavit, the baby died early Thursday morning from blunt force head injuries, with the medical examiners ruling the death a homicide.
The affidavit goes into detail of the hours leading up to Jaxson’s death.
Hopkins told detectives she had a small amount of whiskey with friends Wednesday night, but she was not drunk.
The baby slept in bed with her, and she said she woke up during the night to discover the baby was cold and covered in bruises.
Hopkins claimed to have nothing to do with the baby’s death, and said she believed one of her two other sons, who both have special needs, may have crawled into bed with her and accidentally smothered the baby.
She continued to exclaim her innocence, but was arrested when detectives found gaps in her story and she admitted that she was drunk and did not remember what happened.
“From what I can tell, she’s a wonderful mother and she has a lot of friends and family and support, and I really don’t know what happened. I’ve read a little bit about the details in the police affidavit. This sounds like a situation where she is not guilty. And it seems like just a horrible tragedy has happened,” said defense attorney Christopher MacClean.
Hopkins was given a court appointed lawyer and is set to appear in court again on Monday for a bail hearing.
Until then, she will be held at the Two Bridges Regional Jail without bail.
