OLD TOWN – The dreadful tax season is officially upon us. While this could mean dangerous territory for many, there may be some benefits you are missing.
“We get hit very often here with people trying to break into our system” said Jesse W. Baker, owner of the Tax Clinic.
With technology and scammers improving, filing your taxes online has become more dangerous. Baker says he consistently updates his software so hackers cant get in.
Sot- they keep getting stronger and better as time goes by, and because of that the IRS is going to delay to make sure the refund goes to you and not someone else.” said Baker.
These delays mean you’ll need to budget. Money you were expecting to receive in April such as childcare may not be mailed to you right away. But this years taxes wont bring all bad news. Barker says “Maine’s a pick up state. Most people that work that have businesses drive pickups and they run a lot of mileage. this year they brought the amount of mileage, the dollars, that you can claim down to fifty four cents a mile.”
This increase means you can file for the money you use driving to get medication or driving to your job, and put it to good use. But for the owner of a tax clinic, Baker jokes that at his age, taxes aren’t the thing he’s most afraid of, “I have to watch my workers… they move things on me”.
