ELLSWORTH – Ellsworth police are trying to find those responsible for stealing mail from a rural section of the city.
A resident living on the Winkumpaugh Road discovered a stash of mail in some woods and called police. They discovered more mail during their investigation and determined at least eight homes had been targeted by thieves.
All of the homes that were affected were on roads around the Branch Pond area.
Ellsworth Police Chief Glen Moshier stated “Some of the residences appear to be summer residences so our officers are still in the process of tracking down the owners to determine what if anything of value was missing.”
Chief Moshier sadded all of the mail appears to have been stolen the last week of December and the first week of January. He also warns this is the time of year thieves sometimes target mailboxes in search of tax returns.
He urges people to keep an eye out and to report anything suspicious.
