BANGOR – If clearing your roof sounds like a taxing chore, then you should know that the consequences could cost you up to $5,000.
An ice dam is a accumulation of ice on your roof that prevents water from running off, and can cause long term damage, including mold and leakage.
Keith Trembly said the best way to prevent this from happening is to use an ice scraper, or apply ice crystals to get the excess ice off.
Trembly stated “All you need to do is take off the first two feet of snow on your roof, and generally that’s enough to keep an ice dam from forming. Most people use the famous old roof rake.”
Trembly warns homeowners to read the labels if using ice crystals, not all brands are durable for roofs. He also encourages homeowners to heavily insulate their attics.
