NATIONAL – A final round of hearings got underway in Florida today as the U.S. Coast Guard continues its investigation into the El Faro disaster.
33 people died when the cargo ship sank during Hurricane Joaquin in October of 2015.
The captain and several of the crew members were from Maine or attended classes at Maine Maritime Academy.
The hearings will determine if negligence contributed to the disaster, with hopes of recommendations that will help prevent similar events.
One thing that will help is the addition of the voyage data recorder which indicates there was confusion about the location of the storm before the ship sank.
That information, along with recordings of communications aboard the ship were not available during the previous rounds of hearings.
