BREWER – A local shoemaker has decided to close a local factory and layoff its employees.
The Justin Brands Shoe Company has confirmed it’s closing the Highland/Chippewa factory in Brewer.
25 full time workers and two part time employees are losing their jobs.
The company released a statement saying it spent the past two years trying to introduce its hand-sewn footwear into the domestic and international markets. But because of increased competition and the strengthening of the U.S. Dollar internationally, it has been difficult to penetrate the market.
It also tried to partner with other companies, but decided to close the local factory when it became clear there wasn’t any meaningful interest.
The employees have been offered severance packages and the company is trying to find them jobs with other businesses.
