BAXTER STATE PARK – A man from Holden has fallen to his death on Katahdin.
Park officials said the 68 year old man had been camping with a group of people at the Daicey Pond Campground.
He and a companion set out on Saturday to climb the Abol Trail, but he slipped near the top of the Abol Slide and couldn’t recover his footing.
Officials said the man slid more than 1,000 feet before coming to a rest near the bottom of the open section of the slide. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Park officials were notified by other climbers and the wilderness rescue team helped recover the mans body.
He has not been identified.
