MILLINOCKET – Its been 10 years since Baxter State Park has seen a fatality during the winter months.
But with two separate deaths in February they want to remind people of ways to stay safe while enjoying the park during the winter months.
Park Director Jensen Bissell told us that they have a list of recommendations for winter enthusiasts. He said “We always advise folks coming into the park their safety is their responsibility. We’ll give great recommendations about how to be prepared, but its really important for folks especially in the winter to be prepared for their expedition. To have the right equipment, the right training and make good decisions on the trail.”
Officials say to never go hiking alone, as safety is seen in numbers. They also say if you are hurt there is a better chance of getting help when with a group.
Millinocket Regional Hospital sees a number of winter injuries related to outdoor activities.
Physicians Assistant Kevin Olsen stated “Most of them are cold injuries which are usually due to being exposed to the cold and dampness.”
