EAST MILLINOCKET – A court decision Wednesday is providing new hope to people wanting to see a new use for the former paper mill in East Millinocket.
Recently a company filed a lawsuit seeking to stop the demolition of the buildings at the former “Great Northern Paper Mill.” It also wanted the company doing the demolition to spare equipment needed for a new biofuel business.
A judge granted the request Wednesday and issued a temporary restraining order, preventing the destruction of some buildings and the sale to other parties.
EMEP LLC of Lincoln has reached an agreement to purchase the site in order to set up a biofuel facility that would employ more than 100 people.
It claims “North American Recovery Management” violated a purchase agreement when it began demolishing buildings needed for the new project.
EMEP is now in talks to complete the purchase with hopes of beginning fuel production in 2019.
