SANFORD (WGME) – The body of a missing Sanford woman was found just 200 yards from where she was last seen.
Game wardens located the remains of Kerry Rear, 40, on Wednesday behind the Lil’ Mart where she was last seen on January 22.
A detective who spoke with WGME said they don’t believe the discovery would have happened, if they didn’t have a stretch of warmer weather which melted the snow pack.
Rear went missing just before a series of large snow storms that brought a couple of feet of snow to the Sanford area.
Officials said Wednesday was an emotional day for detectives and family members.
“We try to leave no stone unturned, but the woods are large and it takes a lot of people and these were hasty searches they were not shoulder to shoulder searches on a grid that was going to come later on down the road as weather warmed up,” Detective Sergeant Matthew Jones, Sanford Police Department, said.
The investigation into Rear’s death is just starting and the circumstances around her disappearance are still unclear.
The medical examiner will be working to determine the cause of death.
