AUGUSTA – Many kids across the state go to school hungry, but that could soon change.
Federal money is already available to provide the meals, but many schools aren’t using the funds.
Calais Senator Joyce Maker wants schools to take advantage of that money and feed hungry students. She said she has seen the benefits of the program in Calais and wants to make certain all the state’s students have the same chance.
Senator Maker stated “And they go back and sit in their desks, by their desks, and they eat their breakfast. It’s not a big deal. She says the difference in the kids learning and in the environment, it’s so much better.”
Maker said any cost from the state will be minimal and likely will only be needed to cover the one-time purchase of equipment.
