AUGUSTA – Programs aimed at removing the barriers to college were at the State House today.
Maine’s TRIO and Gear Up programs were there to educate legislators about what they offer and why funding should be continued.
Student Erin Qui said “It really does help a lot whether its self confidence or just opening up your eyes to different opportunities. We get to build a family basically. We get to go to different events or go to things we haven’t seen before.”
The programs are geared to low income families and those with low educational attainment. They are designed to help remove the barriers to college.
Officials said college access helps to break the cycle of poverty and strengthens Maine’s educated workforce.
