BANGOR – Bangor city councilors continue their talks about who should be able to regulate the sale of marijuana in the city.
There’s a temporary ban in Bangor which is expected to continue until the state releases its regulations. However each town or city will be allowed to make their own decision on how marijuana is controlled.
City Council Chair Joe Baldacci thinks the government should have control over the sales.
Baldacci stated “My suggestion was that if we did that and the city was able to operate it, the revenues would be staying with the local budget, the local police, fire, roads, schools because under the current law almost none of the money goes to local communities.”
Baldacci also said government control will make sure marijuana doesn’t end up in the wrong hands.
Other councilors disagree, saying the government can’t interfere.
City Councilor Ben Sprague took to his Facebook page Wednesday saying if the government is going to place a ban on marijuana then it can’t be the only seller.
A public meeting to discuss marijuana rules will happen Monday at 5:30 p.m. in the city council chambers.
