BANGOR – Winter storm Stella did much more than simply dump a ton of snow across the Northeast.
It also caused dozens of blood drives to be canceled which has left the region with a big blood shortage. 27 drives were canceled this week in Maine alone leaving our state about 900 units short.
Winter is already a tough time of year to keep local hospitals supplied with blood and other blood products. That’s why the Red Cross is turning to the public for help.
Sherri Phinney from the Bangor chapter said “We are just in dire need. We’re looking to put on extra drives. We’re looking to encourage more donors to call a neighbor, call a friend. Please come on down and donate.”
Sherri said there’s a critical need for type “O” blood and platelets.
The Red Cross is extending its operation hours at many of the blood donation centers to help fill the need.
You can schedule an appointment to donate by calling 1-800-RED CROSS or by visiting redcrossblood.org.
