BANGOR – Bangor is among the many communities struggling with how best to embrace legalized marijuana.
It’s considering local regulations for the new industry and asked for public feedback during a meeting last night. They sure got it.
City councilors heard from people who want to see marijuana retail sales and social clubs.
They also heard from others, including the police chief who’s concerned that allowing social clubs will result in more impaired drivers on the roads.
Others don’t like the recent talk of Bangor getting into the pot business and think it should be left up to the private sector.
The city is considering making changes to local development codes which will determine where marijuana businesses can be established. Officials said they’re still in the early stages of drafting regulations and no decisions were made last night.
The state has already imposed a moratorium that will prevent any of those businesses from opening until statewide regulations are also established.
