LEWISTON (WGME) – A Lewiston woman accused of having more than 60 pets in her apartment, pleaded not guilty to animal cruelty charges.
Wednesday a judge told the accused, Samantha Bell, she’s only allowed to have aquatic pets like fish now.
In March, officials seized more than 2-dozen cats, several dogs, chinchillas, pigeons, and lizards from Bell’s apartment.
Officials said one animal was dead and others needed medical attention.
Bell told WGME she’ll fight to keep at least one of her dogs, which she says she uses as a service animal.
Bell’s friend Jonathan Diaz stated “She did not mistreat any of those pets. Do you think 64 was just too many? She was trying to help in areas where other people refused to help she had animals that people would just abandon and she was just doing her best to make the lives of those animals better.”
Bell’s fiance, Paul Lauze also faces an animal cruelty charge and is in custody for violating probation.
