BANGOR – The State of Maine is seeing a spike in pertussis cases just as doctors are warning about a continuing flu problem in our area.
A local primary care provider said your best defense is to get vaccinated.
He’s seeing a large number of patients with influenza A and B.
Matthew DeRosby, PA-C, said “Most of the time when you catch influenza it will be one or the other. Typically you won’t get both strains in the same season. And the influenza vaccine will usually guard against both strains.”
DeRosby said false reports of vaccines being the cause of autism and other diseases have led to pertussis and other illness that were almost unheard of to make a comeback. “We do see these from time to time that pop up. The biggest cause of pertussis outbreak is the failure of parents to get your kids immunized.” he stated.
He said as soon as your child is born you and your child’s doctor should set a vaccination schedule.
