AUGUSTA – Maine lawmakers have presented a bill to ban the purchase of legal marijuana with TANF program benefits.
If this bill become law, it would be illegal to use money intended to help low income families to buy recreational marijuana.
Representative Patrick Corey, R – Windham, “We also had a TANF Product Ban, which covered items like alcohol, tobacco, firearms, jail bond, adult entertainment. So I just thought it was only appropriate that on that vice list that we added recreational marijuana, recreational marijuana products.”
Lawmakers admit it is a challenge to police such purchases since TANF recipients can take cash out to buy the things their family needs.
