HERMON – Fire crews from seven departments fought a fire in Hermon Sunday afternoon.
Just before 4:00 p.m. firefighters were called to the Maine Salt Factory on Colbrook Road. When they arrived they found black smoke and a forklift on fire inside the building.
Crews worked quickly to put out the flames and keep the building from being damaged, especially since there were large propane tanks directly behind the factory.
Hermon Fire Assistant Chief Eric Pelletier said “Any time you’re dealing with a commercial business there’s always hazards outside of a regular residence. You have to be concerned with propane, natural gas, you’ve got the railroad right behind here. So any time you’re dealing with a commercial building there’s a challenge.”
Pelletier added that fire detection and suppression systems make a difference, and that if the fire had happened at night, it could have been a different story.
