KATAHDIN REGION – Game officials are investigating a deadly boating accident in the Katahdin Region.
A young man was killed Sunday while whitewater kayaking on Nesowadnehunk stream leading into the Penobscot River.
Inland Fisheries and Wildlife officials say Joseph Giffune Junior, 25, of Millinocket was paddling with a friend around 5:00 p.m. when he became caught in a “hydraulic” at the bottom of an area known as the ledges. He couldn’t free himself and his friend also couldn’t help.
Giffune was swept downstream into the West Branch of the Penobscot and was unconscious when he was pulled from the river. Efforts to revive him failed and he was pronounced dead the scene.
Giffune was an expert paddler and has both worked as a rafting guide and as the river manager for New England Outdoor Center.
