AUGUSTA – Republicans are still trying to repeal the three percent tax surcharge.
Last November voters approve the law that adds a three-percent tax on household income above $200,000.
Democrats believe the legislature should pay attention to the voters.
Representative Gay Grant, D-Gardiner, said “All of us are here trying to make good policy, good tax policy. We want to fulfill what the voters intended, which i believe is a progressive and fair and equitable tax system.”
The money from the surcharge is earmarked for education.
Governor Paul LePage has pledged on numerous occasions that if the legislature approves a budge, which includes the three percent tax surcharge, it will be vetoed.
