BELGRADE (WGME) – After an officer involved shooting in Belgrade left one man dead and another in the hospital late Friday night. Now days later investigators remain tight-lipped.
Even the victim’s family is in the dark about the events that led up to the gunfire.
Right now, it’s unclear exactly what took place outside the home of Roger Bubar. The attorney general’s office said Sergeant Jacob Pierce reportedly shot back after being fired upon. Sgt. Pierce wasn’t hit. But Roger Bubar died of gunshot wounds and his son Scott Bubar was wounded.”
John Short, neighbor and witness said “There was a commotion going on over there.”
Neighbors said it all started with someone burning rubber in Bubar’s driveway, with the car even hitting his mobile home.
Sheriff Ken Mason stated “There is history at that residence, both between our agency and state police.”
Neighbor John Short said even before officers arrived, he heard a gunshot. And he satated after sheriff’s deputies arrived, he heard several more shots. He said Yyeah, we heard one gunshot prior to the police showing up and then quite a few afterwards. They started shooting at the cop, I mean, at the sheriff, and he did what he had to do.”
The Maine State Attorney General’s office said there was an exchange of gunfire with police, with Sgt. Jacob Pierce of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office returning fire.
The AG’s office said Roger Bubar, 65, died from gunshot wounds, and his Scott Bubar, 40, was shot once. Investigators say Scott Bubar is out of surgery and recovering in the hospital.
The sheriff stated his investigators have not had a chance to question him yet. But Kennebec County Sheriff Ken Mason said Sgt. Pierce’s use of deadly force was justified.
Sheriff Mason said “He did what he was trained to do, which is protect himself and to protect the public.”
The AG’s office won’t say who shot at the deputies. Roger Bubar’s daughter, Laurie, told us police aren’t telling her anything about what happened, and are not letting her see her brother in the hospital.
There are actually two investigations going on right now. The attorney general’s office is looking into the officer-involved shooting. And the sheriff’s office is investigating Scott Bubar and the incident that took place here.
