UNION – The body of an elderly man has been recovered from the rubble of a farmhouse in the Town of Union.
It was around 2:00 a.m. Wednesday when someone noticed the home on Route 131 was on fire.
It was engulfed in flames by the time the first fire crews arrived on the scene.
Officials said the body of Lawrence Dries, 80, was found in a first floor bathroom.
He was well known in the area and once the manager of the JJ Newberry Department Store in Rockland.
The home was also one of the oldest in Union.
An excavator was brought to the scene to level the remains of the house so fire fighters could douse remaining hot spots.
The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office will also try to determine the cause of the deadly fire.
