CANAAN- A Waterville police officer was shot in both arms early Sunday afternoon.
That’s according to a Maine State Police spokesperson, Steve McCausland.
The suspect, 29 year-old Richard Murray-Burns of Harmony, was located in Canaan where he was shot at by 8 officers.
We’re told Murray-Burns was carrying an assault style weapon.
Authorities said he fired at Waterville officer, Timothy Hinton, after being stopped for a shoplifting complaint from Walmart.
Hinton pursued Murray-Burns until other officers picked up the chase.
McCausland said the suspect was shot at the intersection of Routes 2 and 23, where there was a heavy police presence throughout the evening.
The officers that shot at the suspect have all been placed on administrative leave with pay.
Murray-Burns is being treated at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
The extent of his injuries have not been made known.
The incident is being investigated by the Attorney General’s Office.
