ISLAND FALLS — Two people were killed after a car went off Interstate 95 North in Island Falls and caught fire.
According to a press release from Maine State Police Troop F, the accident happened around 3:30 p.m.
Police said the driver, Colleen Collins, 35, of Presque Isle, and a passenger, Mary Michaud, 62 of Van Buren, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The statement said Collins lost control of the vehicle and hit the trees before the vehicle caught fire.
A third passenger, Keith Michaud, 42, was transported to Houlton Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to the release.
Since the damage to the vehicle was so extensive, authorities said they cannot tell if the victims were wearing seat belts.
