BELFAST – An elderly man is dead Saturday night after he threatened police and others with a gun.
Dispatchers received a 911 call just after 7:00 p.m., during which gunshots could be heard in the background.
When police arrived, Dennis Ward, 72, emerged from the home on Lincolnville Avenue and confronted two Belfast officers with a pistol.
The officers allegedly repeatedly told Ward to drop his weapon, but he instead shot into the ground, then raised it toward one of them.
One of the officers tasered Ward while at the same moment, the other fired his sidearm at him, missing twice.
Once incapacitated, Ward was taken to Waldo County General Hospital to be checked for injuries, and while there, experienced medical complications and died.
Neither officer was hurt in the altercation.
