AUGUSTA – Education funding is at the heart of the political divide, stalling an agreement on the state budget.
Wednesday, several dozen protesters exercised democracy as they walked the halls of the State House letting lawmakers know education funding is critical to Maine’s future.
Organizer Liz Smith said “I don’t have kids. I don’t work for the schools. I’m not a teacher. I never have been. I just think as responsible community members we need to support our schools first.”
Smith said republican legislators she tried to talk with were silent, while democrats urged her to rally people to lobby their lawmakers. This morning’s demonstration was the result of six days of work by what Smith called concerned taxpayers.
