BANGOR – The 2019 novel coronavirus has Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center officials preparing for any potential cases.
Robert Pinsky, the hospital’s infectious disease specialist, said health officials currently don’t know how much the virus can or will spread but so far there have been no reported cases of the virus in Maine.
He said the coronavirus and the common cold have the same initial symptoms to look for.
“The symptoms are really nonspecific. Like many respiratory viral infections, they begin as fever cough and as they progress, increase in shortness in breath and it can progress to pneumonia, which can be severe and potentially fatal,” he said.
He also said the threat of a breakout in Maine is low but the hospital is increasing security by adding extra screenings for employees, visitors and patients alike.
