BRIDGTON – A lightning strike is believed to be the cause of a fire that destroyed a home in Bridgton.
A series of powerful thunderstorms rolled through the region last night. It stayed far enough to the west that many areas escaped with just a little rain.
Elsewhere, they saw heavy downpours, lightning and lots wind. That was the case in Bridgton where crews were called to the Commons Road around 8:00 p.m.
The home was already engulfed in flames.
Officials said no one was home at the time.
The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office will now try to pinpoint a cause of the fire, but fire officials suspect it was caused by lightning as the storm system rolled past.
