LIBERTY (WGME) – Authorities said a 14-year old boy may have stolen as many as 11 cars in three states. And after days of out-running police, he’s now in custody.
Police found the 14-year-old hiding above a garage. As police went to apprehend him, he jumped out the window and started running down toward the lake.
Neighbor Jim Isherwood said “That’s the route he took, because the dog knew where he was going.”
Isherwood and his wife have a camp on a pond in Liberty. He told WGME a few nights ago, a state trooper and sheriff’s deputy searched his garage looking for the runaway teen. He stated “They told us there was a 14-year-old that was from the area. His uncle lived next door. And he was on the run.”
It was up to Belfast Police officer Travis Spencer and K9 Dex to find him.
As police gave chase, the teenager jumped into the north end of the pond and swam to an outlet. That’s when he crossed the road and then continued swimming in the south end of the pond.
Isherwood stated Tthey lost the scent somewhere down below here in the pond. Then they picked it up further down the road.”
Police said the next morning, they got a report of a break-in at island camp on the pond. That’s where K9 Dex, a shepherd mix, again picked up the teen’s scent.
Isherwood said “They said he was barefoot.” He continued “Said he hadn’t eaten in a few days. And I guess he was breaking into camps to find food.”
The two tracked him to another camp where they found the boy and took him into custody.
“He had been in this area for years with his uncle. And he knew the woods.” said Isherwood. “So he felt very, very comfortable hiding here.” he added.
Until the dog outsmarted him.
Isherwood said “He was playing cat and mouse with a dog, and the dog won. (Laughs)”
The teenager was taken into custody. He’s now at the juvenile detention center in Charleston, Maine.
