SURRY – “Nobody comes into an ice cream shop without a smile on their face,” said Eric Treworgy, owner of Pugnuts Ice Cream.
Everyone has been hard at work lately at Pugnuts Ice Cream shop in Surry, Maine.
“We’ve got a big order to place for Friday for McGraths in Northeast Harbor,” said Karl Holmes, who makes the ice cream and gelato.
The shop will begin selling their brand of ice cream and gelato this weekend in Northeast Harbor. For Karl and Eric, it’s exciting to see their brand sweetening up the area, after only opening the store a year ago.
“The concept was, ‘let’s bring something completely new and unique and different to downeast Maine’ and we thought, ‘let’s do gelato,'” said Treworgy.
“They come in that door and they see the product right away and they see the gorgeous gelato and they start to ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh,'” said Holmes.
Everything you see inside the case has a unique flavor, and the owners went to great lengths to make them.
“We enhanced our education from what we were doing to also go to Italy to learn how to make gelato for two and a half weeks,” said Treworgy. “We had the top gelato maker in Bologna as our instructor and there were only six of us in the class.”
There, the two learned that there’s more that goes into gelato than just the ingredients.
“Being able to present ice cream and gelato in a fashion that makes it fun and different,” said Holmes.
“How to scoop it, how to display it, everything. So it’s fantastic,” said Treworgy.
They returned passionate as ever, ready to combine what they learned in Italy with the flavor of Maine. And to them, it doesn’t even feel like work.
“Owning a Gelateria is the happiest type of business that I’ve ever had,” said Treworgy.
“Working here at Pugnuts has been just a blast,” said Holmes.
