MADISON – Police are continuing to search for the motive that sparked that shooter’s rampage in a triple homicide in Madison on Wednesday. Somerset County Sheriff’s Deputies shot and killed the man who allegedly murdered his wife, son, and a neighbor, and sent a fourth man to the hospital with gunshot wounds. Neighbors say they are shocked, but not completely surprised by the murders.
The sound of sirens woke people on Russell road Wednesday morning. Donald Curtis was worried about Michael Spaulding, a neighbor who had heart problems. But while he was headed to Spaulding’s home gunfire erupted.
“I see Harvey drop but I didn’t actually see Carroll shoot him. But it apparently was Carroll who shot him,” said Curtis.
Police say Carroll Tuttle shot Harvey Austin, 57, from Skowhegan as well.
“He looked like a dead man, laying in the road – that’s what he looked like,” said Curtis.
Austin remains in Eastern Maine Medical Center recovering from gunshot wounds.
“Blew my mind, because I thought it was a brick of firecrackers. That’s what it sounded like. Firecrackers going off. And that’s what I thought. Then I looked out and saw Harvey drop. And realize there was gunfire,” said Curtis.
Curtis lives next-door to the house Carroll Tuttle jr. Shared with his common-law wife, Lori Hayden, and their son, Dustin Tuttle. Tuttle allegedly shot and killed them Wednesday morning.
Tuttle also allegedly shot and killed Michael Spaulding, 57, who lived across the street from Curtis.
“I was very surprised. I started crying, mostly because our neighbor, Michael, he was an amazing man,” said Megan Curtis, a neighbor of the murder victims.
Thursday afternoon, relatives returned to the Hayden/Tuttle home to retrieve personal belongings of the deceased.
A neighbor who knew Carroll Tuttle junior in high school says he always believed Tuttle’s life would have a tragic ending.
Police continue to seek any information that might lead them to conclude what caused Carroll Tuttle to snap Wednesday morning.
“Why would you do something like. Your own kid. Your girlfriend. Your neighbor. It’s just unexplainable,” said Curtis.
