AUGUSTA – Despite a few recent high profile murders the number of homicides statewide this year are on par with previous years.
Maine State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland said as of Thursday there have been 11 murders in Maine which is more than last year.
He also said there was an unusually low number of murders last year.
“The main component of homicides in Maine is domestic violence. You’re far more likely to be killed by someone who at one time loved you, or currently loves you or is a family member, than you are to be killed by a stranger or by a drug deal.” stated McCausland.
McCausland stated there’s been an increase in the number of drug-related homicides during the past couple of decades. He added however the average number of murders in Maine still hovers around 25 per year.
