PORTLAND (WGME) – It’s being called the chance for a brighter future for Maine’s immigrants.
That’s the idea behind a new program to provide loans to to Maine residents aspiring to become U.S. citizens.
The loan program called “Bridge to Citizenship” was announced today by Infinity Federal Credit Union. The loans are designed to cover the cost of becoming a U.S. citizen and to establish a positive credit history.
Elizabeth Hayes, Pres. & CEO, Infinity Federal Credit Union, said “It’s very expensive, so the loans are there to assist them on things like the application fee, legal fees, the green card, things like that. So we can help them become us citizens.”
Wednesday’s announcement was made at the newest Infinity Federal Credit Union branch on Baxter Boulevard in Portland.
