NEWPORT – Bikers and fans of hot rods came out to enjoy the beautiful weather Sunday for the 11th Annual Bike, Hot Rod, and Car Show. But it’s the cause behind it that’s drawing people to Newport.
For 11 years, BB’s Tattoo Co. has hosted the Annual Bike and Hot Rod Show to help people in the area facing their own trials and tribulations.
“It’s been all walks of life,” said Chad Wynne, an artist at BB’s, “I mean sometimes it’s an older person. Sometimes it’s a very young child. Always different problems and different issues and everybody needs help every once in a while.”
This year they are raising money for Zack Nickerson,19, who’s battling multiple health issues.
“We’re here to raise awareness to his illness and other illnesses like his in local communities,” said Joe Lovely, the owner of BB’s.
Nickerson lives with Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) and has had two lung transplants. On top of that, he also has cancer.
“We really want to be able help him out and help his family relieve some of their financial burden and show that local people are supportive of what they are going through,” said Lovely.
Nickerson has to travel to Boston regularly for his treatments. That and hospital visitations are becoming a financial burden for his family. It’s situations like these that this event is looking to help with. This event not only brings locals together, but has people traveling from out of state to support the cause.
“You’d be surprised at how far people come to get together for this event every year,” said Wynne, “It’s amazing that everybody gets together to help somebody they don’t know.”
