EAST MILLINOCKET – The concept is creative, but simple; The “I” in Maine is missing on purpose to allow visitors and neighbors to stop in town, fill the space, and become part of the display.
“It encapsulates this region; you know, we’re rugged, we’re beautiful,” said Canaan York, the sign’s creator. “That mountain is it, but there’s so much else to it as well… I’ve had some people, of course, who look and say, ‘you do realize you’ve misspelled the sign.’ But they very quickly get the idea, or when the concept is explained to them they think it’s neat.”
Though the image is next to his business, Canaan says it’s meant to lift spirits and profits across his beloved town.
“I want this entire region to thrive, and i think that’s the biggest thing for me,” said York. “It’s Maine, and it’s people that step in and complete the photo, it’s people here that make our state incredible.”
