ORONO – A scary scene on the highway in Orono late Wednesday night.
Police and fire crews responded to I-95 at mile marker 192 around 10:30 PM. When they arrived, they found a pickup truck driven by John Beckwith, 61, of millinocket. Beckwith had driven into the grassy median and lost control, striking a column supporting an overpass and crumpling the front of the vehicle.
“It took some time to get the driver extricated,” Corporal Trevor Snow of the Maine State Police said. “The driver was trapped in there, the vehicle is destroyed.”
Corporal Snow says Beckwith was conscious when he was removed from the truck, but not fully coherent.
He was taken by ambulance to Eastern Maine Medical Center.
