MACHIAS – The new terminal at the Machias Valley Airport is almost finished.
Several more months and a few more projects should see the completion of the necessary work.
Town officials hope this attracts business opportunities to the region, but the current 2,100 foot runway just won’t cut it.
Machias Town Manager Christina Therrien said “The ultimate goal would be to see a 5,000 foot runway. That would support what we need for life flight. That would let us do economic development as far as cold storage and shipping at the airport.”
She said the additional runway length might even lure U.P.S. or FedEx to Washington County.
According to Therrien the plans call for new lighting and a complete runway reconstruction.
