BREWER – A family-run dress shop has been making sure everyone can afford to go to prom.
Giggey Girl Gowns on Pierce Road in Brewer has re-opened with dozens of donated prom dresses, tuxes, and accessories.
The shop offers the dresses and tuxes free of charge, but does accept monetary donations for the dresses from those that can.
The shop was started by a young woman who was having health issues, and wanted to help others.
That woman’s mother, Kim Emerson, said that since opening seven years ago, about 475 dresses have found their new owner.
She said she was thinking about closing up shop this year, but now that some affordable stores have closed in the area, Emerson’s glad they re-opened.
“We don’t want these dresses to stay here on hangers, ” said co-founder Kim Emerson. “We really want them to be dancing at prom. If you want to go to prom and you don’t have the money, that should not be an obstacle, there should be nothing that holds you back from those memories.”
Anyone looking for a dress or tuxedo, or anyone interested in donating a dress, can find more information on Giggey Girl Gown’s Facebook page.
