ORONO -The UMaine Alumni Association honored two notable Maine families during their annual awards event Thursday night.
Among the eight honorees at the event was John Baldacci, a former governor of Maine. He was given the “Alumni Career Award”, based on his decades of public service.
Senator Susan Collins also attended the ceremony with multiple members of her family. The Collins were given the “Fogler Legacy Award”.
13 members across four generations of the Collins family have received a UMaine degree – something the Maine senator said she’s extremely proud of.
“We are very grateful to what the University of Maine has given to my family,” said Senator Collins. “And I am very proud that my family, which is being recognized tonight, has given back to them.”
Senator Collins’s grandfather, mother, and brother have all chaired the Board of Trustees at UMaine.
She also spoke about the impact that University of Maine students have on the state’s economy, particularly in renewable energy and agriculture.
