CARMEL – Monday’s fire at Ideal Recycling, Inc. shut down part of Route 2 in Carmel for hours.
Carmel Fire Chief Ralph Shaw said a dozen fire departments from around the area responded to the scene off of Main Road. Fire officials got the call for the debris fire around 11 a.m. Monday.
The Air National Guard was also called in to spray water from above on the burning scraps.
The debris pile was still smoking later into the evening.
Carmel fire officials said a couple cars in the scrap yard somehow caught fire.
First responders used a crane to separate the burning pieces and put out hot spots.
They said there weren’t any fire hydrants, so they had to truck in water.
“That’s been our biggest struggle is getting water to the scene, our closest water supply was probably two miles away,” said Carmel Fire Chief Shaw.
The Salvation Army was on scene and neighbors gave emergency responders food and water.
The exact cause of the fire is not confirmed, but fire crews said it’s not suspicious.
