BAR HARBOR – Tourism season is in full swing, especially in Bar Harbor.
Memorial Day weekend signals the beginning of summer for business owners in Bar Harbor. Tourists travel for hours, or even just a few towns over to experience all that the village has to offer.
“We had loads of people in town,” said John Bench from Cool as a Moose. “There was an art show in town for a couple days, and we had a cruise ship on Sunday. So it was another good year to kick off the summer in Bar Harbor.”
Whether the tourists come for the whoopie pies, the national parks, or the whale watching tours, business owners expect this season to be as busy as the last one. With Sunday’s cruise ship bringing in 1,300 people, it made for a profitable weekend.
“Memorial Day weekend is always a great kickoff for our season,” said Denise Morgan from Oli’s Trolley. “We always look forward to it. It’s when we kind of turn things up a little bit, and this season did not disappoint at all. And the weather today makes it just perfect.”
Mixed in with the tourists were Mainers from all over the state. Business usually dies down after Memorial Day, but not this year. Instead, people are sticking around for a little bit longer.
“We’ve done ice cream, lobster, clams,” said Lexie Richter, a tourist from New York who was getting on a whale watching tour. “You know, go to Acadia, Acadia National Park and kind of see it all!”
With such a good crowd over the holiday weekend, it’s a perfect kickoff to the season.
