BAR HARBOR – Memorial Day weekend signals the beginning of summer for business owners in Bar Harbor. Tourists travel for hours, or even just a few towns over, to experience all that the village has to offer.
“We had loads of people in town. There was an art show in town for a couple days, and we had a cruise ship on Sunday. So it was another good year to kick off the summer in Bar Harbor,” John Bench, manager at Cool as a Moose, said.
Whether the tourists come for the whoopie pies, the national parks or the whale watching tours, business owners expect this season to be as busy as the last one.
With Sunday’s cruise ship bringing in 1,300 people, it made for a profitable weekend, noted Denise Morgan, who along with Larry Sweet owns Oli’s Trolley.
“Memorial Day weekend is always a great kickoff for our season,” she said. “We always look forward to it. It’s when we kind of turn things up a little bit and this season did not disappoint at all. And the weather today makes it just perfect.
