BELFAST – There are many towns in Maine that bring a lot of attraction especially in the summer months, Belfast being one of them.
Small independent businesses in the area seem to be the backbone of their economy and the uniqueness that attracts tourist.
Tourist are attracted to the beautiful views and small shops and so are Alex and Lisa. Husband and wife from New England who figured they’d start a boat trip business in Belfast.
Owner of “The Back and Forth’ Lisa Pelling said, “We decided to run The Back and Forth, and the concept is that the boat is here at all times unless it’s in the bay and it literally just runs back and forth between downtown Belfast and the young’s lobster pound.”
They had this boat trip business idea about six weeks ago and are officially open for business as of last weekend.
“So we just kind of hit the ground running and are still running and still running and still running,” said Pelling.
Lisa said she loves how Belfast has independent businesses, “You’re always meeting the owner of the business when you’re in there shopping.”
The “The Back and Forth” will be open seven days a week from sunrise to sunset.
Economic development director Thomas Kittridge said Belfast is seeing a lot of growth in terms of new businesses and businesses that are expanding, “Front yard shipyard has started construction on their building six. We’re looking at a project of nordic aqua farms to build a large scale land based salmon aquaculture facility.”
President of Front Street Shipyard JB Turner said, “We love it here we started here seven years ago we came here because of the proximity of the town because all the captains and our transient people love to walk through the town and being able to see it so having it close is really good.”
Brandie Cardenas, store manager of Out On A Whimsey Toys said after expanding their business on Maine Street they’ve been getting more exposure, “Businesses are shuffling around and it seems to be bringing more vibrancy to the area a lot of people are moving in so we feel that it’s great. Belfast is the place to be!”
