SANFORD (WGME) – One person is dead following a fire over the weekend at a home in Sanford.
Police said that the body of Charles Kerrigan, 53, was found on Sunday at a home at 234 Deering Neighborhood Road
Sanford Fire Chief Steve Benotti said the first fire companies to arrive found heavy smoke fire in the garage and the right side of the building. The rest of the building was filled with heavy smoke and quickly became engulfed in flames. The fire spread quickly.
Firefighters worked to keep the fire under control and find the person who lived there. Kerrigan’s body was found in the garage, which is where investigators believe the fire began, a few hours after the crews arrived.
“The building fell down due to the fire damage and that’s part of the problem right now. With the roof on top of the pile, it’s slow moving and a lot of work to pull it apart,” Benotti said.
Benotti said crews from more than eight surrounding fire departments worked to contain the fire, which slightly spread into the woods and caused a section of the street remained closed for hours.
Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
