HARTLAND – It turned out to be a scary Fourth of July outing for eight people aboard a boat on Morrill Pond.
State game officials said that Christopher Gibson, 43, of Georgia was carrying seven passengers — including five who were under the age of 16 — when the boat he was operating caught fire and burst into flames on Wednesday. He also was towing his son and a friend on a tube behind the boat at the time.
Luckily, all managed to make it to shore with help from the Hartland Fire Department’s rescue boat and those of other boaters.
The 1997 Rinker that Gibson was riding was totally destroyed. While there was no word Thursday morning on what started the fire, officials said it appeared to have started in the engine compartment.
